http://news.yahoo.com/clintons-land-haiti-showcase-industrial-park-070901823.html This article is about Hillary Clinton’s industrial park being established in Haiti to help rebuild after the earthquake. Caracol Industrial Park is projected to create thousands of jobs to help the economic status of Haiti. Hillary stated that it was made to support prosperity rather than providing aid. Some Haitians are against the park and feel this is just replicating the efforts of other failed attempts to help rebuild and will do more harm to the environment. I related this to Reconstruction. Just as Haiti needs jobs to support themselves, thousands of soldiers needed jobs. Southern property had been destroyed from the war as Haiti had been destroyed from the earthquake. Both were extremely poor. During reconstruction the 13th Amendment was made to end slavery, the 14th to prevent rights from being taken away, and the 15th to prevent the right to vote from being revoked. The Freedmen’s Bureau was made to help former slaves receive education, housing, and food. As some Haitians object to the park being built, some people, often known as radicals, opposed the idea of reconstruction. -Alyssa
This article is about an agreement British Prime Minister, David Cameron made with Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, so that people in Scotland can vote if Scotland should stay in the United Kingdom or become it’s own country. People in Scotland will get to vote in 2014 to decide whether to leave the United Kingdom, or stay. However a survey released by TNS-BMRB is saying that less than 30% of people in Scotland don’t want to leave the United Kingdom. The Scottish National Party said on it’s website that Scotland breaking away from the UK “could create an environment where our existing and new private industries can grow more easily” so Scottish industries could benefit from Scotland separating from the UK. Some people who want Scotland to separate from the UK are worried that Scotland’s economy will do bad if Scotland separates.
Scotland voting on if they’ll stay in the United Kingdom is related to when we learned about homesteaders who moved to the Western part of America. This is because both things involve people leaving something and doing something that makes them more self-reliant. For example if Scotland leaves the UK, Scotland could do things with it’s oil that the UK might not have allowed. This can make Scotland more self-reliant. Meanwhile homesteaders going to the West were leaving most of civilization to farm in the West, which was hard because of weather and building houses out of mud. That probably made them more self-reliant.
My article is about how Obama is now going to have to deal with the foreign policies that are going to be very difficult because he is dealing with North Korea, the Middle East, and China. So far he has dealt with China, but the goverment is not sure what to do with the the others.
This realates to the Progressive Era because the goverment was decideing what to do with foreign countries and what the foreign policies are going to be.
This article is about Obama being re-elected as President and what the writer of the article thinks he should do in his second term in contrast to events from his first term. Some of these events include maintaining health care, his choice for secretary of state, and most importantly, foreign relations and policy. One thing the writer notes is that Obama attempted to avoid situations with the Middle East in his first term, and that the United States needs to be involved in the rest of the world despite its many domestic problems. Criticisms are also made to Obama by the writer for his issued international attacks and potential military action. This story can relate to the foreign policy vocabulary that we learned in class. One word in particular came to mind as I read this article: Isolationism. The definition that I have in my notes read that isolationism is the "belief that America should stay out of world affairs." This can relate to the article because it seems as if Obama is attempting to make the United States become isolated from the rest of the world due to the country's own problems, and likely wants to fix these problems, as the notes say that isolationism can occur from a leader worrying about fixing their own country's problems over global affairs. It also seems that Obama wants to isolate America from the Middle East due to all the recent military activity that has been issued by himself there, most notably Osama Bin Laden's murder. I think America can only hope that Obama will at least decrease the many issues with the country's foreign policy and isolationism in his second term.
My article is about bullying. Bullying is when someone hurts someone elses feelings by hurasing them. This includes name calling, exclusion, violance, ect. Bullying is a huge problem in america there is bullying in every school. They have declared bullying a national problem. People have many ways of expressing their exposure to bullying. Some people be a bully back, become depressed, hurt themselfs and in extreme cases comit suicide. Bullying is wrong. Bullying relates to social studies because in social studies we are learning about forein affairs and the spanish american war and we learned about a thing called imperializum which is basicly bullying but powerful countrys bullying less powerful countrys. -TRICK

http://www.therepublic.com/view/story/f16c744bb8e74931abed28f4f83f63d9/IL-XGR--Closer-Look-Veto-Session This article has to do with giving illegal immigrants drivers licenses. This is a good idea because it will encourage the purchase of car insurance. This is so because this will make sure that these immigrants are qualified to use the vehicle their driving so the roads are safer. If the illegal immigrants get in a crash, they will have insurance to help cover them so the various social services provided by the government will not have to help provide food and other necessities due to their lack of money. One downside to this law is it will help encourage immigrants to stay in America illegally because we are just making it easier for them to do so. We are giving things to people we don’t like but for the better cause. This is similar to what we are studying in social studies because that is what many alliances were like. Alliances provided food, protection or anything else a country might need. It doesn’t mean we have to like the country, but it is to help influence a better cause like defending them from a bullying country.
On November 30, 2012 the Philippines and China got in a disagreement about where they should keep the ships. The Philippines has accused China of being “dictatorial” over the plans to keep the ships where they are. China didn’t want them. "They say that these ships will remain there permanently. The longer the ships stay, the more impossible the situation becomes," said Albert Del Rosario. On Friday, Philippines President Benigno Aquino said that Manila would lodge a formal diplomatic protest over the new Chinese law. This is like imperialism. Imperialism is a policy of extending a countries power and influence through diplomacy or military forces. China wants to have all the power and the final say in what happens with the ships. The Philippines wants that too, but I think China is going to win. I believe China is more powerful. China defiantly is more imperialism then the Philippines are.
For my blog I did it on the Israel rejects that attacked because of some building plans. I think this related to social studies because we just watched a movie about the Germans attacking and other people fighting. Also the Spanish and American war had a lot of fighting. The people had a plan to build brand new houses for people and Israel rejected the offer. The people who offered building houses was the U.S and Europeans. This reminded me of how two countries working together like allies against another country. Also when the two countries are threatened then they help each other out. Since Israel rejected their plans they attacked. The house plans just reminded me of how badly the house were in the movie because of the war and all the fighting / the exploding bombs and stuff that was hitting them. So they would have to make new houses too.
In the article I found it talked about people with disabilities and how the United Nations is trying to remove the barriers between the disabled and the nondisabled. All disabled people want is respect and to be treated like every other person. So this year on International Day of Persons with Disabilities the theme is going to be “Removing barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all”. Many people feel ashamed about their disabilities. They complain about how public bathrooms are not easily accessible to someone with a disability. I am relating this back to when black people felt like they were being treated badly. White people didn’t treat the blacks as their equals, just like the handicapped are not being treated equal either. The blacks always felt like they were the odd ones out. There weren’t many people who cared about the black people, which made them feel even worse. -Shannon H.
This article was a bout the allies that America has in the Middle East. Our allies are Egypt, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. These three allies met in Syria to make plans for Iran to join in. They want to join Iran to form a negotiation to end the civil war there. Some people agree but others do not like a person that said "Iran's part would be anything but constructive."
This relates to what we are currently doing in class because we are also learning about the allies that are in WWI. This story is a little different because it is more to end the war that is being fought then to start a new one. WWI had allies that helped each other so that they could win over the other groups of allies on the other side. Its also a lot of strategy if a country is going into an alliance because they need to be able to trust the country and know what is the best for both of the countries in that alliance. That is how my article related to what we are learning about in class right now.
http://gma.yahoo.com/us-denies-losing-drone-iran-113713413--abc-news-topstories.html This article is about the United States denying that a drone aircraft was captured by Iran. The drone, unarmed, was flying over the Persian Gulf in Iranian airspace when it was supposedly taken down. The United States claimed it was not their drone and may belong to another country as it was an “off the shelf variety” of the ScanEagle aircraft. This article relates to the sinking of the USS Maine. The USS Maine was either attacked by an enemy ship or had an explosion in the boiler room. The United States blamed Spain for the sinking and Spain denied the attack on the ship, as the United States denied the attack on the drone. -Alyssa
http://www.thehobbit.com/ The hobbit is a movie where this group of people that join together fight the evil of their land, this movie is all about friends and alliances. This relates to social studies because we're learning about WW1 and how alliances were made and how there was two sides the allies vs. the central powers. Alliances are very important and who who choose to be your ally may be the difference in win or loose. -TRICK
I’m doing my blog on the movie hobbit because hobbit is a movie about war and right now we are learning up/ finishing up about World War 1. Hobbit is a movie where a bunch of people group up together to fight the bad things in their land. It’s like making an alliance today but it’s in a movie so that’s why I picked it. Alliances are really important because you don’t want a lot of people against you; you want to know that you will have people that can help you or people that you can rely on. That’s what happened in this war. More alliances keep joining the war because if it’s their enemy they want to fight them but if it’s their ally they want to help them. The more people you have who are fighting with you the better chance you have of doing well in wars.
http://news.yahoo.com/bangladesh-probe-fire-sabotage-owner-negligent-151949772--finance.html This article is about the factory fire in Bangladesh. A government committee of Bangladesh investigated the factory to find that the fire had killed 112 people. With more investigation they found that the fire was sabotage, most likely by someone who worked there. Whether or not the fire was sabotage, the owner of the factory will be charged for the deaths because he ignored worker safety. Officials say the number of deaths could have been avoided if the factory had followed safety rules. This relates to the sinking of the USS Maine. Before the Spanish-American War began, the USS Maine exploded and the cause was unknown. The United States blamed Spain for attacking the ship causing it to explode. Later on, people found that the explosion may have been caused by an issue in the boiler room. Eventually, the United States joined the war. This relates to the article because in both situations there was an act of sabotage, that could have been an accident, and both could have been avoided in the case it was an accident.

ReplyDeleteThis article was a bout the allies that America has in the Middle East.

ReplyDeleteThis article is about the United States denying that a drone aircraft was captured by Iran.

ReplyDeleteThe hobbit is a movie where this group of people that join together fight the evil of their land, this movie is all about friends and alliances. This relates to social studies because we're learning about WW1 and how alliances were made and how there was two sides the allies vs. the central powers. Alliances are very important and who who choose to be your ally may be the difference in win or loose.

ReplyDeleteThis article is about the factory fire in Bangladesh.
